This year’s Remembrance Tree service was held remotely, via Zoom, on the 5th December. The event was led by Reverend Doctor Rosie Dymond, from the Church in Wales, supported by Sister Mary Jo of Noddfa, and Minister Joyce Warner from St Paul’s Church. Weatherman Walking: The Welsh Coast: 16 April
Abergwyngregyn to Conwy

BBC Wales weatherman Derek Brockway brings the outdoors inside. Whilst unable to venture out to explore currently, all the stunning scenery and history that the Welsh coastlines have to offer can be experienced from the comfort and safety of home with the new series of Weatherman Walking: The Welsh Coast. In this programme, Derek visits north Wales, as he takes the 14 mile trip from Abergwyngregyn to the fortified medieval town of Conwy.

Early into his journey, Derek meets with Tim and Ester Sherlock, whose dogs (both called Izzy) are mountain rescue search dogs for SARDA Wales (Search and Rescue Dog Association in Wales). Keen to see the dogs in action, Derek sets a challenge. Using a fleece from his bag, he aims to see if they are able to sniff him out from amongst the rocks.

In Penmaenmawr, Derek learns about the ancient history of quarrying in the seaside town. Over 5000 years ago, on the hill of Graiglwyd, men were able to create stone axes from the rock there. In later years, the rock became valuable again as blocks of it were quarried for paving the new streets of north west England, including Manchester and Liverpool.

As Derek approaches his destination, he stops at Conwy Morfa to discover more about the top-secret plan to build floating harbours there during World War II. Speaking to local historian Adrian Hughes, he learns how crucial they would prove to be in allowing men, vehicles and supplies to get ashore after the D-Day landings of 1944. Many from the local area worked on the project, making it a story that the people of Conwy today don’t easily forget. In many cases, it forms part of their family history.
