Three New Councillors

Three new councillors have been welcomed onto the Town Council and two of them are already involved in the future planning for the area through the Kickstart Meetings for a Place Plan.

Colin Brooks Williams will represent the Pant-yr-Afon Ward, Steven Consterdine will represent the Capelulo Ward, Gavin Parry will represent the Pant-yr-Afon Ward, and Cllr Jack Sterricker-Ellis has changed the area he represents to Penmaneman.

This leaves two vacancies to be filled in the Pant-yr-Afon Ward and one in the Penmaenan Ward. Anyone interested in joining the Town Council should contact the Clerk at [email protected]

New Clerk

The Town Council is pleased to announce the appointment of the new Town Clerk Mark Hadley-Smith.

Mark started the full-time appointment on Monday 5th December and will be working diligently to catch up with all the projects and business of the Council so he can take over completely from the Locum Clerk as soon as possible.

Mark re-located to North Wales in 2019 from Hertfordshire. Asked about his new role Mark said ”I am looking forward to the challenge and getting to know the people of Penmaenmawr.”

Christmas Lights and the Remembrance Tree

13 December 2022
It has not been from the lack of effort that the Town is not lit up this Christmas. The change in legislation and the gap in not having a clerk did not help the situation. Then unfortunately the efforts being made with Conwy County Council were blighted by staff having Covid so that completely made it impossible to even achieve a scaled down version of the lights.

A councillor did suggest purchasing solar lights to be put on street furniture but in the end, it was decided that there was not enough time and there would be highway restrictions as to where they could be displayed, so it was decided that unfortunately this year it would just have to be the Christmas trees.

These are in place for the festive period and dedications are being displayed on the Remembrance Tree outside the Community Centre in Penmaenmawr.

A Christmas Working Group will be put together early in the New Year to ensure that the lights and events are in place for 2023.

Remembrance Tree 2022

Due to circumstances this year, the Dedication Service will not go ahead as usual, but that should not prevent dedications being displayed.

Dedications for the Remembrance Tree are being taken by the Town Council. Email your names to [email protected] or drop a note into Town Council Offices, Community Centre.

Christmas Lights in Penmaenmawr

The lighting up of the Christmas trees and the highway in Penmaenmawr this year will be a more low-key event than in previous years. This is partly due to a change in health and safety legislation and partly due to a change in staff for the Town Council.

The change in legislation has resulted in the local volunteers who formed the Light Up Pen group deciding that the new legislation was too much for them to deal with and they would not be able to achieve the National Highway Sector Scheme HERS accreditation that was now required.

The Town Council extends a huge thankyou to Light Up Pen. The Town Mayor Cllr Chris Williams said “The group did a fantastic job dedicating a lot of time to bring us enjoyment over Christmas. We hope to work closely with members of the group and indeed the wider community, to ensure we use their knowledge and enthusiasm to light up Pen to their high standard in the years ahead.”

The Town Council is currently working diligently in partnership with the County Council to meet the new requirements and to make sure that some festive decorations can be displayed. A thorough review is scheduled for January to ensure that all the necessary requirements to meet the new health and safety standards are in place for the future.

The change in circumstances has also impacted on the “Lighting Up Event” usually organised for the Remembrance Tree. In fact, a community lighting up event may not happen this year, but this should not stop those wanting to dedicate a light to someone special letting the Town Council know the name(s) of those special people and every effort will be made to arrange a banner displaying the names.

You can email the Clerk at [email protected] with your dedication. An update on the arrangements for the lighting of Penmaenmawr will be issued as they are confirmed.

Commissioned by Penmaenmawr Town Council, Plastic Free Penmaenmawr and Conwy County Borough Council. The sculpture consists of six metal rods that are attached to the wooden sea defence (groyns) at the high tide mark of the Promenade. Each rod holds two fish made from recycled plastic that swivel and move with the wind. (Swapping water currents for air currents) at 4.5m in height and 4m width, the coloured fish move in unison to create a kinetic, dynamic spectacle for the general public to enjoy as they amble along the historic Promenade.

Work is ongoing to improve the pond area, currently, the pond is looking "muddy" it is expected that this settle and ask for your patience with this.
